Two DAP grassroots leaders say that some NGOs are being used by politicians to carry their personal agenda.

GEORGE TOWN: Several Indian NGOs came under fire today for interfering into DAP’s internal politics and holding demonstrations against party leaders.

Pahang DAP deputy chairman J Apalasamy questioned the motive and intention of the NGOs in getting embroiled in DAP’s internal affairs when the groups should be focused on carrying out social programmes for the Indian community.

“Indian NGOs should stay away from DAP politics. I can’t comprehend on why the groups are putting their noses into our affairs,” said Apalasamy.

DAP Jalan Bagan Luar branch chairman G Asoghan, from Penang, concurred, saying that NGOs have no business to get involved in any political party affairs.

He slammed the NGOs for holding demonstrations and protests against DAP national chairman Karpal Singh and several other elected representatives for questioning the leadership competence of Penang Deputy Chief Minister II (DCM 2) P Ramasamy.

“It’s grossly wrong and unethical for the NGOs to take sides in political parties’ internal problems. Who are they to publicly attack Karpal?” asked Asoghan.

He called on all DAP elected representatives to reveal all details of allocations dispersed to Indian NGOs in the country to identify the “troublemakers.”

“We can identify the NGOs, that held demonstrations against DAP leaders recently and ban them from funds next time.

“It seems some NGOs were given funds by certain reps to nurture personal political allegiance,” he said.
He said DAP members wished to know what the NGOs have done for the community with funds given to them for past four years.

As far as Asoghan and Apalasamy are concerned, Indian NGOs have barely done anything worthy for the betterment of Indian community despite receiving hefty funds from both sides of political divide.

Most of these NGOs, they alleged, were focussed on carrying out ‘wayang kulit’ programmes.

Asoghan and Apalasamy also chided NGOs for questioning DAP leadership’s decision-making on the appointments of commissioners in the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB).

The duo said given that PHEB was a state-based statutory body under the DAP-led Pakatan Rakyat state government, the party would naturally be involved in the decision-making process.

“The DAP leadership headed by Karpal will surely have a big final say on who sits as PHEB commissioners,” they insisted.
